Corte, a hike in the Corsican historic capital city
Corte, walk in Corsica's history
and in the heartland wonders of the famous "Isle of Beauty"!
Where is Corte?
Corte, located in the heart of Corsica, in the majestic mountain chain that spreads across the island, this city is certainly the most important one of the entire Corsican history: home of the government of Pascal Paoli, instigator of the Corsican independence in both 1755 and in 1794, the city is known across the island today as the cultural capital city of Corsica, due to its major importance in some of the most important periods and events that have shaped Corsica. Home to the first University on the island, the city is today a small but vibrant city as the 4000 students make up for half of its population. Walking in the small streets of this city and up to its citadel perched on a rocky spur makes up for a wonderful day out. The beautiful view from the citadel, that acts as a belvedere over the whole city: a must-see! Also, why don’t you take the time to try out the famous Corsican charcuterie?
What can you see around?
Discovering the city by foot is great but it’s position on the island makes this city even more interesting as the surrounding areas are truly stunning: a walk in the Restonica valley, the gorge of the Tavignano river and the Melo and Capitello lakes make up for some of the best hikes and walking paths in Corsica. If you enjoy walking in an exquisite protected natural park, with its incredible scenery, well this might be the perfect place for you.
Not only a charming city in the heartland of Corsica, Corte should be a hiker’s top destination when travelling to Corsica!
