Calvi, hiking and cycling holidays on the Corsican coastline
Calvi: a walk in Corsica's rich history
The fortified city of Calvi is a wonderful example of the tumultuous past of the city and the impact of the Genoese influence over this beautiful island, nicknamed the “Ile de beauté” – the beauty island. This city is separated in two parts:
- The first part comprises the houses and the citadel: it is the ancient city, where most of the population used to live during the middle age and the centuries after. At first the citadel was only 3 Genoese towers that protected the village. After several battles in the Mediterranean, the Genoese decided to fortify most of its dependencies such as Calvi. They were also built to protect their commercial interests on both Corsica and in the Mediterranean Sea. This part of city, as it is older, regroups most of the attractions as for the edifices and monuments linked with the historical events and cults.
- The lower part of the city: built in the 19th and 20th century to expand the city that was ever-growing. Indeed, its population rose from 1412 in 1856 to 5177 in 1999! In this part of the city you will find a multitude of street with restaurants and shops. Calvi is also know for its incredible beach of white sand and turquoise blue water. A wonderful place to discover by foot and relax on the beach at the end of hike and enjoy a marvellous view of the city and its fortress!
