Wine tours Provence : cycling self guided wine tours and holidays

4 trips

Some of Europe’s best wine & cycling routes are in Provence!
Cycling through Provence you’ll visit a never-ending sea of vines, draping the countryside from village to village. Châteauneuf du Pape boasts the region’s most famous vines, producing powerful and spicy reds among its 300 different estates, while the wine-making villages of Gigondas and Vacqueyras also produce reputable reds. In the Luberon valley you can cycle from village to village at the foot of the mountains; on the southern sloes of the Luberon the vines are ever-present, set close to prestigious châteaux, while on the northern side – where Peter Mayle spent his Year in Provence – the villages of Bonnieux, Lacoste and Ménerbes also offer some voneyards and winery stops

Imagine cycling from wine-making village to wine-making village, along tiny and seldom-used roads, with a never-ending sea of vines to either side, basking in the ever-present sun. Welcome to Provence! The Côtes du Rhône wine-making region is the second biggest vineyard in the world (second only to Bordeaux!).

The Côtes du Rhônes wines sit just above the Rhône Valley, and offer a playground of cycling itineraries through the prestigious vines of Grenache and Syrah, the Mistral winds helping you as you move southward.

The most famous of these wine-making villages is Châteauneuf du Pape, its vines nestled under a blanket of polished red rocks, and producing many world-class wines.

Cycling around the Dentelles de Montmirail hills you reach the pretty villages of Gigondas and Séguret, both perched high above the vast vineyards. Sip a rosé under the shade of a plane tree in the village square while you rest your cycling legs.

Peter Mayle’s Luberon mountains offer some magical cycling itineraries through the vineyards, its country roads meandering from one hilltop village to the next. The southern flanks of the Luberon produce great wines.

Farther south are the Alpilles mountains and Saint Rémy de Provence, also producing some wines. Here you can cycle along the foothills or up to the perched Medieval village of Les Baux de Provence for some breathtaking views!
