Cycling tours and holidays in Van Gogh Alpilles

12 trips

The Alpilles mountains stand as the last natural fortress before the plains roll out to the Mediterranean Sea, and where Van Gogh spent the last year of his life:  taking walks through the countryside and painting prolifically.
At the foot of the Alpilles mountains is the village of Saint Rémy de Provence, filled with quaint cafés, restaurants, art galleries, and winding pedestrian streets. The Provence weather is what attracted Van Gogh to the region, highlighting vivid colors: a dream come true for any artist.

The Alpilles Mountains offer a backdrop for some of the best cycling in Provence: the small country roads lead from village to village, passing olive groves, sunflower fields, lone farmhouses and cypress trees, and open poppy fields.

In the plains you can cycle to the picturesque and authentic villages of Maillane and Graveson, while on the tiny Montagnette hill you reach the magnificent abbey of Saint Michel de Frigolet, with its architecture ranging from Romanesque to Baroque.

You can then freewheel back down to the plains, where at the foot of The Alpilles mountains you can discover the quaint villages of Maussane and Fontvieille. The foothills are draped with France’s largest olive grove: the setting for some of the best cycling holidays in France (at least in our opinion).

With a little extra power you cycle up to the perched Medieval village of Les Baux de Provence, listed among the most beautiful villages in France.

We offer several self-guided Provence cycling holidays in this region, bathed in sunlight and in warm weather.

This is Provence cycling at its best.
