PRIVATE GUIDED DAY TRIP - Moderate - St Remy & Alpilles Mountains

PRIVATE GUIDED DAY TRIP - Moderate - St Remy & Alpilles Mountains

135

Our guided hike begins in the center of Saint Rémy de Provence. We climb up a scenic botanical path through the heart of the Alpilles Mountains. We head up to the picturesque crest of the jagged limestone hills. On a clear day the Mediterranean is visible to the south, while Mont Ventoux paints the backdrop to the north. We take a spectacular narrow footpath that follows the top of the jagged limestone crags, with continuous stunning views in all directions. There is some light scrambling, though no dangers involved.

After a gourmet Provençal picnic atop the crest we begin our descent back to the plains and visit the asylum that Vincent Van Gogh called home the last year of his life. We return to Saint Rémy where – depending on the day of week and the season – we taste some of the region’s prized olive oil.

  • Our hike begins in the center of Saint Rémy de Provence. Beyond the olive groves and pretty villas that dot the foothills, we begin to climb up a scenic botanical path through the heart of the Alpilles Mountains. We head up to the picturesque crest of the jagged limestone hills. Though small in stature, the Alpilles Mountains sit in an otherwise flat Rhône Valley, and the views are wide-sweeping. On a clear day the Mediterranean is visible to the south, while Mont Ventoux paints the backdrop to the north.

After visiting a rounded summit as a warm-up, we remain atop the crest where a narrow footpath negotiates its way atop the jagged limestone crags. There are continuous stunning views in all directions. There is some light scrambling, though no dangers involved.
After a gourmet Provençal picnic atop the crest we begin our descent back to the plains. The olive and cypress trees lead us past magnificent villas and farmhouses and to Saint Paul de Mausole: the asylum that Vincent Van Gogh called home the last year of his life. We visit the asylum, and then return to Saint Rémy where – depending on the day of week and the season – we taste some of the region’s prized olive oil.
