PRIVATE GUIDED DAY TRIP - Moderate - Aix en Provence & Ste Victoire

PRIVATE GUIDED DAY TRIP - Moderate - Aix en Provence & Ste Victoire

135

The Sainte Victoire mountain sits isolated near the beautiful town of Aix en Provence. Cézanne was born in Aix en Provence, and spent his later years here, painting the Sainte Victoire obsessively.

Your expert guide will lead you up the fabled Sentier Imoucha trail that remains on the crest, and we reach an improbable priory built on the ridge. Above the priory is the massive cross that marks the top, from where the 360° views are outstanding.

We descend via the more gradual, northern slope, in careful zigzags, reaching the small village of Vauvenargues, Picasso's final resting place.

  • Departure: 9AM at the Bimont dam of Aix en Provence (12km/20mn from the centre)
  • Return: around 5PM at the Bimont Dam
  • Rate : the published rate is for 4 participants with one guide
Please contact us if you are less than 4 persons

Titre Ste Victoire Cezanne

aix en provence day trip hiking in provence

  • LOOP walk - 5 hours (7 miles)
  • 9am : meet your guide at the Bimont dam, next to Aix en Provence (20mn drive)

  • The Sainte Victoire mountain sits isolated near the beautiful town of Aix en Provence. Cézanne was born in Aix en Provence, and spent his later years here, painting the Sainte Victoire obsessively. And it’s easy to obsess over it: the jagged limestone range rises steeply and clear above the surrounding plains, seen from afar, with the unmistakeable cross that sits high on the ridgeline.

Your expert guide will lead you up the fabled Sentier Imoucha trail that remains on the crest, shared often by flocks of sheep, where the efforts of climbing are quickly rewarded by great views. The sustained climb lasts up to three hours as we reach an improbable priory built on the ridge. Above the priory is the massive cross that marks the top, from where the 360° views are outstanding.

After a picnic lunch on the ridge, we descend via the more gradual, northern slope, in careful zigzags, reaching the small village of Vauvenargues. The village’s castle was purchased by none other than Picasso, and it’s his final resting place. A short bus ride takes us back to the Bimont Dam.

  • 5pm : End of your walking day at the Bimont dam

  • Included :
    - 1 guide for the day
    - Your picnic
    - Bus fare return from Vauvenargues to Bimont dam

  • THE WALK
The walk is  11 km long in total, and you can expect up to 5 1/2 hours of walking time.  The paths are well-worn but are rocky: there's a sustained climb from the dam and up to the ridge, lasting as much as thre hours. A few steep steps are required to reach the cross at the summit but that's optional. You can choose to wear hiking boots but trail runners are sufficient if you're used to hiking with them on mountain trails.
