It's a gentle cycling holiday -perfect for beginners- accompanied by the scents of thyme and rosemary, through olives groves and lands of vineyards. Arrive via Avignon and transfer to the medieval town of Uzes: its centuries-old and grandiose stone buildings framing a labyrinth of cobbled streets.

From Uzes the Mistral winds push you southward to the Pont du Gard - the most imposing bridge ever built during the Roman Empire, and then finally to St Remy de Provence: a lively town with vibrant cafes, restaurants and a famous sprawling market. Along seldom-used roads , you will ride along the traces of Van Gogh in the plains and hillsides of Provence. You will explore Les Baux de Provence, a village built atop a vertiginous rocky spur, and listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France. And the charming village of Maussane, land of olive groves.

Day 1

Towards the charming town of Uzes


  • IMPORTANT : you have to start this trip on a Friday
  • Arrive in Avignon: your tour starts with a short taxi transfer to Uzes, the first Dukes of France reigned. Uzes is a very charming town, its centre harbours a wealth of beautiful and imposing monuments, including the duke's castle. The cobbled streets in town are lined with regal 17th and 18th century stone homes. You can explore the town squares and shaded cafes, while the wide open "Place aux Herbes square" is one of Provence's finest, framed by stone arcades sheltering boutiques and restaurants. Dinner on your own and night in Uzes.
  • We recommend : have an extra night in the beautiful medieval city of Avignon, and don’t miss the famous Pope’s palace !
  • Access : regular train lines from Paris or Marseille airport > Avignon with the high speed train TGV on the SNCF website

St Quentin la Potterie and its famous local potters

  • Uzes > St Quentin la Potterie > Uzes (20 miles)
  • Today is the famous Saturday morning market day of Uzes ! Take the time to enjoy the market before leaving for your cycling journey.
  • You explore the countryside around Uzès, dotted with tiny villages and adorned with vineyards. Leaving Uzès you pass stunning farmhouses, passing the Domaine de Malaïgue wine estate, with their flavourful and powerful red organic wines. You reach St. Quentin la Poterie, a small village world renowned for its pottery-making, and attracting artists from every corner of the planet. The artists' boutiques reveal a wide array of styles, inviting you to stroll around the tiny streets of this tightly-knit village. St. Quentin is the perfect stop for lunch, with a variety of bistros to choose from. Cycle back into the heart of Uzès for your second night. Dinner on your own and night in Uzes.

The towering Pont du Gard


  • Uzes > Pont du Gard (25 miles)
  • Leaving Uzes, a short hill takes you up to a perch among the region's typical Garrigue vegetation: wildflowers, herbs and shrubs. From here the view extends to Mont Ventoux, Provence's highest peak some 1912m above sea level. Your adventures lead you along the Gardon river and through the village of Collias. Soon after you reach the Pont du Gard, a 2000 year-old monumental Roman aqueduct bridge set high above the river. Incredibly intact after 2 millennia, one can only wonder how the Romans were able to hoist 6-8 ton blocks almost 50m above the river.  You can enjoy your picnic under the bridge, your feet swaying in the Gardon river.
  • Transfer from the Pont du Gard to St Remy de Provence with your bikes, an artists' town where Van Gogh spent the last year of his life. Dinner on your own and night in St Remy de Provence.

Cycling at the foot of the Alpilles


  • Saint Rémy > Eygalières > Saint Remy (18 miles)
  • Your cycling trip follows today the base of the Alpilles mountains to the east, first on small roads and then on a track leading into the vines. You reach the picture-perfect Provençal village of Eygalières, off the beaten tourist path, whose main square offers a few restaurants and cafés for a midday break. Heading northbound on tiny roads you reach the sleepy village of Mollégès before returning to St. Rémy through the heart of the countryside. Dinner on your own and night in Saint Rémy de Provence.

  • Leaving St. Rémy, you can visit Saint Paul de Mausole, where Van Gogh spent the last year of his life. Biking along the winding streets of the the Alpilles mountains, in landscapes of pine trees and wildflowers, you reach Les Baux de Provence, a town perched vertiginously atop a rocky crag, crowned by the ruins of its feudal castle - listed among the most beautiful villages in France. Dinner on your own and night in St. Rémy.

Day 6

Market and cooking class in St Remy de Provence


  • Today, you will experience the "Provençal way of life" !  A unique market & authentic cooking experience !
  • You will spend the morning with the chef  : starting with a coffee followed by the market in St Remy , gathering all your fresh ingredients among the local producers. The town's Wednesday famous morning market fill the centre with colourful stalls. Around 10.30am, you' are back in the kitchen with Yvan the chef, that will share with you all his "little cooking secrets". Then, you will enjoy your prepared lunch on the veranda overlooking the garden, or on the terrace under the olive trees. 
  • Transfer at the end of the day to Avignon. End of the trip in Avignon.
  • Return: regular train lines Avignon > Paris and Marseille city-airport on the SNCF website
