Wine tour in Provence villages: the Cotes du Rhone wine villages

COTES DU RHONE WINE VILLAGES

The Rhone valley is the second biggest wine-making region in the world. The Rhone Valley is full of vines draping a countryside dotted with picturesque villages. The Rhone region draws its strength from this rich and powerful river, le Rhône, which shapes its landscape and molds its character.

The "Côtes du Rhône” villages also contribute to the charm of the region as many of them mirror the slow-paced and unique Provence “Art de vivre”.

It counts worldwide famous vineyards - home of some of the finest wines in the world - such as Chateauneuf du PapeGigondas, Beaumes de Venise, VacqueyrasTavel ...

Some history:

With the influence of the Greeks and later on the Romans, the area developped and became a thriving wine producing region in the 1st century A.D.
With the collapse of the Roman Empire of the 5th century, the wine industry plummeted. It only recovered and developped from 14th century, with the arrival of the Popes in Avignon, escaping from the turmoil of Rome, as they were great amateurs of local wine.

Types and specificites of the wine:

Concentrated mainly on reds, with a small quantity of rosés, the Cotes du Rhone wines - which are known for their delicate fruity aroma - can either be aged or consumed while relatively young.

The wines produced draw their strength from the sun and ever-caressing wind - the famous Mistral - and from the determination of the region’s many wine-growers to produce quality wines while respecting the environment.

This area is a wonderful opportunity for wine lovers to enjoy Provence, and its Mediterranean climate, the exclusive French lifestyle and a glass of wonderful rouge or rosé wine.
