Sault: cycle and walk in the lavender fields of Provence!

Sault and the lavender fields of Provence

Some history:

Located on the side of the famous Mont Ventoux, Sault, that culminates at 766metres above sea level, is an old fortified village perched along the top of a high ridge overlooking a wide valley, with large lavender fields spread out below to the south and west.

A long multi-arched road bridge crosses the tiny La Croc stream below, past the southeast end of the village. Along with the ancient buildings lining the high ridge are the remains of a huge feudal castle.

The village is open and relaxed, with wide squares and a good selection of cafés and the nicely-restored central church.

Sites and activities:

“An hour in the footprints of the wolf”: follow this hour-long itinerary to discover some of the very interesting history of this small perched city. Walk in its narrow streets and squares to discover some of its most ancient parts: the old fortified castle and ramparts, middle age and renaissance houses…

L’Eglise Notre Dame de la Tour: built in the 12th century and modified until the 17th century, the church has been one of the major witness of the evolution of Sault.

The Boyer nougat factory: located in the centre of the village, this small shop displays and sells typical local products. If you have a sweet tooth, you are in for a treat! Guided visits are open to public in summer (subject to availability).

Our tours are closely linked to the famous "Route des Lavandes" that stops in some of the places that we have selected!

The lavender fields:

The lavender fields around Sault sit in a low area surrounded by mountains: the Ventoux and the Lure mountains range across the northwest and northeast and the Plateau de Vaucluse is spread out across the south.

Sault is praised all over the world for its cultivation of lavender and very famous for its lavender festival called the “Veraison”, that happens every year on the around the 15th of August. Sault is also called the "Capital city of Lavender" and certainly has the most beautiful lavender fields in Provence.

Walking, or cycling, along the blooming lavender fields in summer is an incredible experience as you are surrounded by the endless purple fields.
