Saint Remy de Provence, located at the foot of the Luberon mountains is a charming city, famous for the many intellectuals and artists that have lived there.
Home city of Nostradamus, the city is a picturesque and buzzing small Provençal borough: its narrow streets, quaint squares where you can enjoy a meal on the terraces small restaurants and surrounded by local and elegant shops, the city centre is made of many, now-restored, mansions and renaissance luxurious houses.
With the likes of Glanum, a reminder of the past influence and presence of the Romans during the Antiquity, Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, the asylum where Vincent Van Gogh was boarded in 1889 and where, inspired by the building, village and landscape, painted most of his artwork: around 150 painting where portrayed there, Saint-Remy-de-Provence is a must-see when you travel to Provence!
Vincent Van Gogh
Nostradamus, a famous oracle, was born in Saint Remy de Provence and is, with Vincent Van Gogh, one of the most famous residents of this city.
Born in the Netherlands, in 1853, Vincent Van Gogh spent about a year (1889-1890) in Saint Remy de Provence, where he stayed at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole: he was admitted to this asylum after a very violent row with his close friend and fellow painter Paul Gaugin, which finally resulted in Van Gogh cutting a part of left ear off. A very interesting route to follow is the Van Gogh trail in the centre of Saint Remy where you can see where some of Van Gogh most famous painting were done!
The city, that has inspired many, has also attracted many people and have helped develop the city both economically and culturally speaking: It has now become of the most liked villages in the Alpilles area.
