Menton: a walk in the "Pearl" of the French Riviera
Menton: the most Italian French village
Menton, a picturesque and colourful seaside city is the most Italian village of France: It is a city that is located on the border with Italy and has been, in the past, a Monegasque and Italian city. Being a melting pot of these cultures, the city is recognisable between thousands thanks to its unique and colourful houses, built in an Italian architectural style.
Nicknamed the "Pearl of France", the city enjoys a hot Mediterranean type climate with its own particularities: milder winter and warmer nights in summer, the perfect conditions for the many lemon and orange orchards. One of the main events every year in the Lemon festival, organised every February.
Torn between Monaco and the Republic of Genoa, the city wa included in the French territory in 1861 as part of an accord between Napoleon III and the Grimaldi family. Thanks to the publication of one of James Henry Bennett, on the positive effects of the Mediterranean air on the organism, Menton became a trendy tourist destination, with many English and Russian aristocrats travelling there. They later built hotels, villages and palaces, increasing tourism in that city. Thanks to its many and various beautiful gardens – the city is famous for the beauty of its parks – but also thanks to its historical sites and museums, such as the Jean Cocteau Museum, Menton has become an emblematic village of the French Riviera.
The lemon festival:
This traditional festival comes from the hotel managers of the city that submitted, in 1875, to the municipality of Menton the idea of creating a carnival, in winter, to make Menton livelier in these "sad" months of the year. Citrus fruits, being produced in quantity in this area - that was still the leading exported by 1928 - became the theme to this carnival. Every year, the Menton Lemon festival attracts thousands of visitors thanks to the incredible citrus-made statues that it has on display in the city and during the procession.
