The “route des lavandes”, famous itineraries that run along the nicest areas where lavender grows, are a wonderful way to discover this unique region of Provence and this unique type of lavender, nicknamed the “true lavender”.

Going across some of the most iconic lavender high-places, these itineraries, on which you can bike or walk on, will give you all the information you need to understand the requirements needed to grow this typical Provencal plant: its history, why it grows there, how do you harvest it, what are the uses for this plant… All your questions will be answered!
Some information about Lavender:
The large lavender fields are near Sault, Banon, Valensole on the eastern part of Mont Ventoux, and the eastern part of the Luberon that is higher in altitude.
Lavender is an altitude plant, which generally grows between 800 and 1 200 meters in Provence.
A sterile hybrid called “Lavandin” can grow at lower at lower altitude between 500 and 800 meters.
It is the amount of rain and the warmth in spring that determine the blooming in summer. The blooming period is generally between early June and mid-July.
In the middle of July, the harvest begins with cutting the bunches of lavender flowers by hand, after that the cutting is done by machines.
In Sault, there is the lavender festival each year on August 15th in Sault, which is quite a big feast. Therefore, they do not cut the Lavender in Sault area before August 15th.
