La Brigue, a quaint village in the French Riviera countryside

La Brigue, an Italian village in the French Riviera

A walk in the history of France and Italy

Small village located in the middle of the alps, close to the Italian border, this village is home to one of the most surprising church in the French Riviera: the Notre-Dame-des-Fontaines sanctuary. Clustered in a valley surrounded by an untouched exceptional vegetation, the village is close to the Mercantour National park and of course the famous “vallées des Merveilles” (“the valley of Marvels”), the most emblematic valley of the Mercantour thanks to the quaintness of this valley and the many petrographs visible all around this area. A wonderful area for a hike!

Its history:

Part of the Nice county, La Brigue was one of the only parts of this county not to join France in 1860, but decided to remain under the rule of the Kingdom of Sardinia: actually it is this kingdom that had decided to keep these village (La Brigue and Tende) as they were part of some highest points of the Alps and acted strategic points in this natural barrier with France.

It is only after the second world war, as part of the Treaty of Paris in 1947, that these cities decided, thanks to a referendum, to join France.

What can you do in La Brigue?

As it was an Italian city, La Brigue has many similarities with Italian villages: narrow streets, colourful streets and many religious sanctuaries. Therefore, visiting the Notre-Dames-des-Fontaine sanctuary, the most impressive sanctuary in the area thanks to its incredible fresco picturing the highlights of Jesus’ life; the Assumption, Annunciation and Saint Michael chapels are other religious edifices that you can visit. Very enjoyable walks can therefore be done in this village!

Le “Pont du coq”, a medieval bridge next to the city centre is also to be wandered in as it will give you an insight of the rich history and richness of this village. The Lascaris castle is also a good witness of the development and importance of the city in the past centuries.

Close to the Mercantour National Park, the village and the environing area are perfect for hike lovers: if you are thrilled by the idea of discovering by foot an incredible landscape, a beautiful village with many religious edifices, La Brigue is definitely a destination for you!
