Gordes: enjoy a walk in this beautiful luberon village
GORDES: one of the most spectacular villages of your trip in provence
A medieval Provençal Village:
Built on a rocky-spur, the village of Gordes, one of the most visited Luberon villages, is famous for the incredible sights and unique beauty of this Provencal city. Listed as one of the “Most beautiful villages of France”, Gordes is definitely a must-see when travelling to Provence.
Even if the village is quite small, it is perfect to discover by foot the village’s city centre: its castle, first built in the 11th century and later improved in the 16th century, its two chapels, its cellars of the Saint Firmin Palace and its many narrow and quaint streets make this small city an incredible place to enjoy a walk.
Thanks to its position, on a rocky spur, Gordes offers a great vantage point over the surrounding areas: the village overlooks the Cavalon valley and it faces the Mourre Nègre, the highest point of the Luberon mountains.
The village became famous after the second world war thanks to the many artist and film producers, that came from all over the world, that were intrigued by the unique light of this city, especially during sunsets, and the typical Provençal architecture and atmosphere that was a source of inspiration for them. Marc Chagall for example is one of the most prominent lovers of this village.
What can you do around Gordes?
In the Luberon area, visiting the many picturesque villages is quite an experience. If you want to experience the Provençal lifestyle, like what Peter Mayle narrates “A year in provence”, this is the place to be.
The “Villages des Bories” and the Senanque Abbey are must-do if you are around Gordes: they are examples of the past of Provence, between its typical Bories houses, unique in France, and the past religious history of this marvellous mountainous area.
A walk or a bike ride across the Luberon is truly exceptional!
