The history of Corsica:
Tumultuous. The word that defines best Corsican history is tumultuous as it appears that Corsica was at the centre of many disputes, between states, and even wars. Its strategic position in the Mediterranean made the island become a target to both Corsairs and Pirates at first, who plundered and ravaged the coastal settlements of this island. Later, disputes between France, Genoa, Aragon and Italy would shape the history of this island as it was claimed, successively, by some of the most influent nations of Europe and the Med’ Sea. When not the cause of battles and war, the island experienced many uproars against the rule of their island, first against the Genoese, and then against the Bank of Saint George – that managed the island for the Genoese state – and France. The uproar also lead Pasquale Paoli, a famous Corsican independentist nicknamed the “Father of the Nation”, to create a Personal union with Great Britain. Many political turmoil and independentist movement have helped create a unique lifestyle, customs and character to the Corsican population. The Corsican are a proud population that does the utmost, even today, to protect their land, culture and language.
