Chateauneuf du Pape: a perfect hiking and cycling area in Provence
Chateauneuf du Pape, king of the cotes du rhone wines
Chateauneuf du Pape is a small Provence medieval city globally famous for its many wineries and exceptional quality of its red wine. The excellence of this Chateauneuf du Pape wine comes from the soil, a mix of limestone, deposits of sediments from the Rhône river and pebbles from the Alps, but also thanks to the favourable climate and the will of the wine producer to maintain and better, over the years, the quality of their wines thanks many standards and criterias but also thanks to the creation of the first French P.D.O. (protected denomination of origin) made to fight the counterfeit wines that were sold when this wine became globally famous. To this day, the Chateauneuf du Pape wine is still considered as one of the best in the world.
How is the city?
The village is a small medieval village that was built on a hill. At the top of the hill you can find what remains of the castle built by the popes in the 14th century. Stroll through the small streets of the village, where you will discover Le Chateau des Papes, the Saint Teodorit chapel, the Bienheureux Pierre de Luxembourg chapel… the smalls cafés, its local market on Fridays and of course, head towards a local winery to participate in a wine tasting of this incredible red wine!
Every year, the village goes back to the middle ages for the time of the Veraison festival. It is a perfect time for you to visit Chateauneuf du Pape as it is a real party thanks to the Festin des Papes - a big banquet -, the night shows, the medieval markets, procession, street performances and workshops. Of course, you can wander through the centre of the village where you will have the opportunity to wine taste all the local wineries!
The area, carpeted with vineyards, is a wonderful area to enjoy a great day out cycling and walking in between the alleys of vines!
