Where is les Baux?
Les Baux de Provence, located at the foot of the Alpilles, is a wonderful medieval village and home to one of the richest histories in Provence. Thanks to its hilltop fortress, it was a high place of the County of Provence, as the Baux family mastered no less than 79 cities across Provence.
Why is les Baux de Provence such a must-see when enjoy a walking or cycling trip in Provence?
1. One of the most beautiful villages of France:
Since 1988, the village has been credited of the “Plus beaux villages de France” certification: thanks to its perched citadel, many beautiful ornamented houses – such as the fenetre Post Tenebras Lux – its many chapels and churches, all witnesses of its incredible power and influence of the rest of Provençal region. Indeed, the Baux family ruled over large areas of Provence until 1426, with the death Alix des Baux, last of her name. Followed by the rule of the Neopolitan Kingdom that ruled over Provence and later, added to the Kingdom of France, the citadel of the Les Baux de Provence would later be the centre stage of a vast revolt against the French Kingdom after the Dissolution of its Assembly by the King of that time.
2. This village has many sites to discover by foot:
Added to the Chateaux des Baux, there are also many different sites, monuments and museums that you can discover walking: with the likes of the Carrières des Lumières - that displays digitised masterpieces inside of an old quarry -, the many churches and museums that are located around the old citadel, allow you to wander in one of the most interesting and beautiful places in Provence.
Add to that, its location in the Alpilles, the perfect spot for walking and cycling tours in the endemic vegetation of Provence, the famous Garrigue.
3. A lively small village:
Even though it only has about 400 inhabitants, this village is used to having many tourists visit its centre and have many activities that promote the many aspects of the culture, gastronomy and activity of Provence! A great experience all together!
