  • The famous “Maison Bonaparte”

Birthplace of certainly one of the most famous Frenchman and the most famous Corsican, Napoleon Bonaparte was born and raised in the “Maison Bonaparte”, formerly known as the Casa Bozzi – Bozzi house, one of the most important families in Feodal Corsica -, a house located in the heart of the old town of Ajaccio. Napoleon Bonaparte, imperial ruler of the French Empire, always kept in mind his native Corsica, Ajaccio and his house. Indeed, he decided to upkeep the house and even improve it by investing money in refurbishing it and even expanding it – he bought the 2nd floor during his imperial rule. Given to the French state in 1924, this house became in 1967 a national museum. It also became in 1924 a “Monument historique”. A must-see when travelling in Ajaccio!

  • The Fresch Museum

Joseph Fresch, cardinal and imperial prince of France – uncle of Napoleon Bonaparte – he was one of the most influent people during the rule of his nephew: a French Diplomat, Cardinal, archbishop of Lyon and Grand Almoner of France, he was known a boulimic collectioner and had in his collection no less that 17000 artworks. Many of them where given in his will, with 1000 pieces given to Ajaccio. This donation to the city is the basis of the current museum, in which you can discover many neo-classical Italian, French, Corsican and Dutch paintings. The Napoleon collection is also on display in this museum, as it makes up for a great activity to understand the influence of the Bonaparte family in European art!

  • Walking and cycling around Ajaccio

Nicknamed the “Isle of Beauty”, the surrounding area of Ajaccio is heavenly if you enjoy being active whilst on holiday. A walk in the landscape of this island, or a bike ride on some of most beautiful roads in Europe is strongly recommended as you will really understand where the nickname comes from. Close from the Calanches of Piana, the beautiful Gulf of Porto and the Regional Nature Park of Corsica, it is wonderful to hike and bike in Corsica!
