Ochres quarries of Provence : Roussillon, Rustrel and Buoux
OCHRES QUARRIES OF PROVENCE
Real geological curiosity, the careers are making Roussillon and Rustrel, one of the most renowned sites in the Luberon.
From Roussillon, through Rustrel, and Bruoux, the former ocher quarries of the Apt Valley form a mesmerizing landscape: red, orange, or yellow, which strikingly contrast against the blue sky and the green flora!
These natural pigments have been used since prehistoric times, but it is in 1780 that Jean Etienne Astier Roussillon gives it an industrial dimension until the crisis of the 1930s.
Today cliffs, fairy chimneys, ocher sand mounds are now shaped by the whims of wind and rainwater.
