Provence: food, LUBERON wine and the good life

Provence: food, LUBERON wine and the good life

We've combined the absolute best two things Provence has to offer: its walking paths and its foods!

The walking is light, enough though to see the countryside along its stunning trails through the heart of the Luberon as well as Van Gogh's Provence and famous Cotes du Rhone vineyards, certainly enough to work up an appetite for what we have planned: Châteauneuf du Pape wine tastings, cheese tastings, olive oil tastings, Herbes de Provence farm visit, market visit in Vaison la Romaine, a cooking class of Provence cuisine, and much more...

A great tour of Provence and it famous "art of life".

  • Avignon > Châteauneuf du Pape > Vaison la Romaine (2h - 2.5 miles)
  • We meet at 9.30am in Avignon, city of the Popes. We explore Avignon's indoor market Les Halles, a veritable sensory explosion of the region's best foods and produce. And with our picnic fare in tow, we set off for the famed vineyards of Châteauneuf du Pape, its world-renowned reds powerful with notes of spices and fruit. We stroll between the parcels of vines, partake in a wine-tasting, and enjoy a gourmet picnic under the shade of regal cedar trees.  We then head to Vaison la Romaine, a harmonious mix of Roman ruins, perched medieval village, and a "new" town filled with bustling restaurants and cafés. Dinner included and night in Vaison la Romaine.

  • Vaison la Romaine > Séguret > Vaison la Romaine (2h - 2.5 miles)
  • We begin our day in the village of Séguret, listed among the most beautiful villages in France: a few rows of tightly grouped homes set above the vines of the Rhône valley. The village is largely off the tourist radar, and we take the time to meander through the timeless streets, quiet squares and vineyards. We enjoy the wide-sweeping views of the valley, complete with a picnic lunch.
Upon our return to Vaison la Romaine, we are led through a visit of the medieval village, almost entirely intact, a small maze of cobbled steps between centuries-old homes, and up to the ruins of the medieval castle.  In the evening we have a special treat: a wine and cheese tasting - and all sorts of other goodies - led by a master cheesemonger, earning the title of Best in France. Night in Vaison la Romaine.
  • Activity: Cheese & wine tasting session

  • Vaison la Romaine > Mont Ventoux > Mazan > Fontaine de Vaucluse (1h30 - 3 miles)
  • The weekly market in Vaison la Romaine sees its entire centre filled with colourful market stalls, a veritable sensory extravaganza of foods, spices, and crafts. Take your time to meander through the market and pick up your picnic fare. We then journey to the slopes of Mont Ventoux, Provence's highest peak, to enjoy our lunch with views of the entire chain of the Alps, including Mont Blanc. A café at the very summit tops off the experience atop the legendary mountain. In the afternoon we visit the quaint village of Saint Didier and its famed nougat-maker Sylvain, where the two brothers still make the famed treat the traditional way, using their own honey and almonds. And of course a tasting is in order.
Our final destination is Fontaine de Vaucluse, nestled by the emerald green waters of the Sorgue river, set by its mysterious spring. Dinner included and night in Fontaine de Vaucluse.
  • Activities: Vaison market visit & nougat tasting

Bonnieux & Lacoste: right in the heart of the Luberon

peter mayle luberon provence holidays bike walk hike

  • Fontaine de Vaucluse > Lacoste > Bonnieux > Lourmarin > Fontaine de Vaucluse (2h30 - 4 miles)
  • The Calavon valley is reputed for its fruit orchards, and especially its cherries. The regional specialty is crystallized (or candied) fruit. We visit a local confectionery that makes candied fruit in the traditional way. And of course a tasting, giving us plenty of energy to complete the walk. Our walk begins in the medieval village of Lacoste, crowned by the castle of the divine Marquis de Sade. Instead we meander through a tight-knit set of cobbled streets and walk across a Calavon Valley laden with truffle oaks, muscat vineyards, and cherry orchards. We reach the village of Bonnieux, itself crowned by a 12th century church, and reach the top to admire the view.
In the evening a special treat is planned, visiting Paula Marty's Herbes de Provence farm, and eating a meal created with the very herbs she grows in her garden. The men in the group will be pleased to hear about the medicinal virtues of winter savoury. We return to Fontaine de Vaucluse for a second night.
  • Activities:  Candied fruit tasting & Provencal herb farm visit

Gordes, Roussillon and lavender distillery

  • Fontaine de Vaucluse > Gordes > Roussillon > Fontaine de Vaucluse (1h30 - 2 miles)
  • In the morning we visit a working, family-run lavender distillery, where we'll see essential oil being made, and learn everything you'll need to know about the precious, purple flower. And if you thought lavender wasn't a food, think again.
Two of the prettiest villages in Provence are visited in the afternoon, starting with Gordes, its golden stone homes rising above the Calavon Valley, spinning in circles up to the Renaissance castle at the very summit. And next is Roussillon, its homes bathed in red, orange, and yellow sands from its ochre quarry. We'll visit the former quarry, now converted into a botanical path, where we can dirty our white shoes with the ochre sands. We then leave the Luberon and head towards the Alpilles mountains, a set of jagged limestone pinnacles surrounded by a flat Rhône Valley. Dinner in town and nightin St Remy.
  • Activity: Lavender distillery visit & tasting

Van Gogh's Provence & Cooking class

cooking class provence

  • Saint Rémy > Saint Rémy  (1h30 - 1.5 miles)
  • In the morning we meet our chef who will take us to a local market in a nearby village, to buy fresh ingredients for our provençal cooking class. We enjoy lunch together, after the cooking class.  In the afternoon, we take the Van Gogh path, linking the centre of town with the asylum he called home for a year, facing the same landscapes he painted during the most productive period of his short-lived life, including his Starry Night. Windswept by the Mistral, the landscapes were immortalized in painting by Van Gogh during his stay: the swaying cypress tree, the lone farmhouse, the open fields, the bold colours that attracted so many artists to the region. Dinner on your own and night in St remy de Provence.
  • Activity: Hands-on cooking class

Les Baux de Provence: olive oil mill visit & tasting

olive oil provence holidays summer south of france recipes with olives

  • Saint Rémy > Les Baux > Saint Rémy (2h - 3 miles)
  • Listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France, the fortified village of Les Baux has stood proudly atop its rocky spur for a thousand years, just a handful of homes hovering defiantly above the plains: homes dwarfed by castle ruins that have a thousand stories to tell. We visit the village before exploring the windswept crest of the Alpilles, laden with thyme and rosemary, with views extending towards the vast plains of the Camargue, and the mountain ranges to the north. Nestled at the foot of the mountains are the famed olive groves, producing a world class olive oil. We'll visit the groves, see the machinery, and taste the oil. Return to St Remy for our farewell dinner and final night in St Remy.
  • Activities: Olive oil mill visit & olive oil tasting

Day 8

Bye Bye Provence

  • St Remy > Avignon
