Luberon, full circle: cycling around a magical mountain

Luberon, full circle: cycling around a magical mountain

1315

Have a look at our Guests' reviews

The Luberon Mountains, set in the heart of Provence, are rich in culture and countryside: its hilltop medieval villages – like Roussillon or Bonnieux, just two of a long list– sit proudly above the valley, surrounded by vineyards, cherry orchards, and mysterious truffle oak plantations.

Every day, along seldom used back country roads, you pedal quietly from one village to the next, enjoying well-deserved breaks under the shade of plane trees in a village square, in an authentic café, with a local rosé in hand. There are jaw-dropping landscapes with each turn, and a great diversity of countryside along way, from Mediterranean shrublands to the foothills of the Alps.

  • Gordes > Goult > Maubec > Ménèrbes > Lacoste > Bonnieux (26.7 miles)
  • The perched villages of the Luberon Mountains set the backdrop to Peter Mayle’s "A Year in Provence". Surrounded by vineyards and truffle oak plantations, the village of Maubec offers a small cluster of homes separated by cobbled streets. Ménèrbes, listed among France’s most beautiful villages, seems to hover against gravity. Onward then to Lacoste, crowned by the ruins of the castle of the Marquis de Sade, a village spared from excessive tourism, where you can sit at the Café de France high above the plains and enjoy the view. Your last stop is Bonnieux, its 12th century church offering a careful watch over the village, and shaded by majestic cedar trees. Dinner on your own and night in Bonnieux.

The main square of this small village, with its café and an old stone fountain, is the perfect setting for a break before heading onwards to the east. Through cherry orchards and vines you enter the lesser-known Luberon, and the village of Céreste. Dinner included and night in Céreste.

    • Just outside Céreste, you pass the 11th century Prieuré de Carluc, on the site of an ancient Benedictine abbey, today a set of austere, Romanesque buildings hidden in the countryside. The landscapes form rolling hills, and you’ll catch the glimpses of the southern Alps to the east as you head into the quaint and authentic towns of Reillane and Dauphin, along seldom used roads. Forcalquier's homes rise in concentric circles to the 19th century Notre Dame de Provence chapel, with great views in all directions. The town boasts a fabulous Monday market. Dinner in town included and night in the heart of the countryside below Forcalquier.
