THE LUBERON

With a mild Mediterranean climate, the “Luberon" is a range of mountains ( the “petit” and “grand” Luberon ones ) but also a regional park, with canyons and valleys, where the holm oak, Aleppo pine and scrubland dominate.

The Luberon - setting for the famous Peter Mayle novels - has much to offer to the active visitor: walking trails and hidden country roads that link high-perched Medieval villages, each worth exploring in length.

For a relatively small mountain range, the varieties in landscape are phenomenal: the spectacular cliffs of the deeply encased and humid Aiguebrun valley, the 3000 year-old Buoux fort perched vertiginously over a 500ft sheer drop, the vast plateaus of lavender and truffle oak plantations, the high and exposed grassy ridges leading to the rounded summit, the deep and penetrating greens of the cedar forest.

The Luberon is emblematic of the “art of living” in Provence, with its colorful markets, its heritage and its gastronomy. This is the land of hilltop villages rich in history, vineyards carpeting the hills, truffle oaks and cherry orchards, ocher cliffs .. not to mention the lavender fields: the symbol of Provence!

The Luberon has kept its authenticity with picturesque villages perched high above the valleys. Some of the most beautiful villages of France are in the Luberon : among them are the perched villages of Bonnieux, Lacoste and the chateau of the Marquis de Sade, Roussillon and its ancient ochre quarries, Lourmarin and its quaint cafés, Gordes ..
