Chateauneuf du Pape, king of the cotes du rhone wines
Châteauneuf du Pape - a literal translation of "the Pope's new house" - is famous for its renowned wines.
It is a charming medieval village, all dedicated to wines & its wineries, with narrow streets, curving around the hillside or climbing up and down between the houses.
At its summit stand the vestiges of an ancient castle built by the Popes in the 14th century as their summer residence, to let them escape the city heat of Avignon. It was, in fact, the popes who planted the town's first vineyards.
From the castle hill, you have an outstanding view in all directions, mostly of vineyards.
Many various wineries to discover and wine tasting opportunities !
