Théo LAUTREY
Théo is a graduate of the University of Aix en Provence in sociology and ethnology. His thesis was done in Mali on the Bozo tribe that live along the Niger River. In 2003 he became a professional mountain guide, giving him the occasion to mix his passion for different cultures with travel.
Before 2003, Théo worked with children in summer camps and accompanied group trips through different regions in France.
His travels have taken him to : Italy, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovak Repubic, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Mali, Senegal, Cape Verde...

What brings a Canadian schoolteacher to Provence?
A French girl, actually…  with the advantage that Provence has some of the world’s most beautiful and diverse countryside, not to mention the best food on the planet.  The choice was easy.  And I’m not crying over missed Canadian winters…
From schoolteacher to mountain guide?
Let’s just say that I’ve managed to turn my favourite hobby – walking and hiking – into my career.  In Canada I taught mathematics to middle-school students; now I spend my days walking on seldom-used trails and up to perched medieval villages, through lavender fields and orchards, guiding people who are both curious and elated about their new surroundings.  My office is hard to beat ...
I had to pay my dues though: like any professional in France, national certification is required.  And so I set off to obtain the coveted and arduous mountain guiding diploma, which takes two years.  It was a fantastic experience: helpful, enlightening, great stories.
What’s so special about walking and hiking through Provence?
Provence, like many other popular destinations, has become overly touristy in parts.  But along the walking trails you get to experience the timeless Provençal countryside, far from the crowds, untapped, authentic, breathtakingly beautiful.
I was lucky enough to have been shown this when I first came to Provence, and it’s what I strive to acquaint all my guests to as a guide.
